Our History

You have driven by hundreds of times. But have you ever come inside? Built as an orphanage by Charles and Sarepta Noyes in 1894, the red brick mansion at 801 N. Noyes Blvd. has provided over 120 continuous years of shelter to area youngsters. Much more than an orphanage, “The Home for Little Wanderers,” known today as “The Noyes Home for Children,” was and still is a safe haven for youngsters in crisis. Some are homeless … some alienated from their parents. All are welcome, regardless of their ability to pay.

The benefactor, Charles Noyes, asked that no child be turned away, regardless if their parents could financially contribute to their stay at the home. All would be welcomed and cared for.

Today, the Noyes Home still honors Charles Noyes’ request and opens its doors for children from birth to age 18 while making no financial demands. In 2011 alone, the Noyes Home welcomed 126 youth through its doors and continues to create a safe and nurturing home for children of families who need the time and space to manage life’s challenges.

By offering a new nursery for the youngest members of a family, the Noyes Home has opened its doors even wider a century later. The members of the LUBA Board, the Noyes Home staff and volunteers continue to strive toward their mission to nurture and empower children, youth and families to foster a brighter future.
